What even is a blog?

A blog is just a website that consists of consistently produced content to include a format of words, photos, and sometimes video to support the articles. It can also be a website used as a storefront where actual physical products or even digital products are sold. To keep up with the competitive online market space, the store owner must still operate their ecommerce website much like a blog owner would operate theirs. This means consistently publishing content for SEO ranking and nowadays AEO rankings which stands for “Answer Engine Optimization”.

Step-by-Step Instructions on How to Start a Successful Blog in 2026

Below you will find my step-by-step instructions on how to set up and start a successful blog in 2026. These steps will move you through the technical and strategic points of creating your online space.

Please follow along the steps in the correct order to maximize efficiency. All results will vary. Your eventual revenue will depend on the basics. Starting off on the right foot is always key so make sure you do not get out of order. Let’s get going!

  • Step 1: Sign up for the (FREE) Tara Sutton Roberts Blog’s Newsletter. Get updated weekly, sometimes daily on important action items to follow when starting a blog. The newsletter is full of helpful tips for new bloggers, and old school business owners that can help you especially in the beginning of your blogging journey. If you need more support and resources, then I suggest joining the in-depth online blogging course – Adam Enfroy’s Course. This course offers step-by-step instructions to starting a successful blog. However you mustn’t just go through the motions but instead take action, or you will never see any kind of results. Start taking those action steps that are outlined in the course and you’ll see how easily it can be done and pretty soon you’ll have your very own blog set up for success.
  • Step 2: Start Your Blog – By Choosing Your Niche
If working from home all day writing about things that you love sounds like the business plan for you, then it’s time to start a blog! Blogging is an amazing way to share your story and ideas with the world and earn an income while doing it.The best part of this online business idea is the start-up costs are affordable to anyone which I will touch on later in this post. The first thing we need to do is get you set up the right way. See the next step.
  • Step 3: Start Your Blog – By Choosing Your Name For Your Blog
The very first thing you need to do is decide on what you’re going to call your blog based on what topics you will be writing about. I highly recommend choosing a topic that you not just like but love and can’t shut up about.
It is wise to use a topic that can help others solve a problem so that you are seen as valuable to your readers that way they come back wanting more. How can you help people with your knowledge or love for a specific subject? Start brainstorming ideas and write them all down because you will need these when you select your domain address. Your domain address is the URL link you g/o to that links to your site…for example my blog’s
  • Step 4: Set Up a Self-Hosted WordPress.org Blog/Website & Connect It To Your Domain
So, to make money blogging, you’ll need to be what’s called “self-hosted.” Let me start by saying that to have your site on Blogger or wordpress.com then you are not self-hosted because you will not own your own domain name, and you are being hosted by wordpress’ servers.

When you just get started blogging, and setting up your domain address and URL, you’ll need to be self-hosted. When your website is self-hosted this means you own your own domain or website/blog, but you’re still paying server rent so your blog site can live somewhere safely on the internet. Do not be alarmed by the way it sounds to set up your blog this way, it isn’t super difficult. It is important to have a self-hosted blog if you want to make money off it or else you will be stuck with free platforms with not much control over your site. For example, if you use Blogger it comes with preset templates, regulations, constraints and other rules that keep you constrained to that one platform, and can really limit your ability to earn money from your blog. Another example of a free blogging platform is wordpress.com – which yes, is different from wordpress.org.

To set up your site, it is around $15 to purchase your domain name and then you’re looking at $2.95-3.95 per month for your monthly hosting fee through Bluehost. I personally prefer to use Bluehost versus any of the other services for hosting because they offer such amazing tech support and its simple and user-friendly.

So let me just tell you and be clear that this is all the money you will need to put into your blog before you can start making money from your blog.

Congrats! You have a blog now! It’s time to move on to the next step!

  • Step 5: Find & Install WordPress To Your Website/Blog Domain

After setting up your domain name and self-hosting site, you will need to go through your host to get WordPress set up. This is a very simple step so do not fret and if you need any help you can always contact Bluehost.

    Let me show you here.

The next step will be to choose a WordPress theme and design your logo brand. A WordPress theme is just a template for your blog that sets up the look and feel of your overall blog site.

When I first started building websites before this blog, I used to waste a lot of time looking for the perfect theme, the one I found was always just out of my budget. What I didn’t realize back then was I could come back later for an update but the most important part was to get content flowing and any free basic mobile friendly WordPress theme would do the trick.

If you’re just getting started and you don’t have a lot of money to spend, you can absolutely use a free theme and still be fine getting your new online business going.

You’re going to want to stay with something simple so you’re not spending tons of time on the design of your blog. Even though of course it is important to have a well designed blog, just make sure your fonts compliment each other, you have plenty of white space and your message is clear. Once you start gaining revenue from advertising or other income areas, you can pay a web designer around $300-$800 to get you a site redesign. But that shouldn’t be your focus right now. You should focus on getting your blog up and running and then quickly developing content shortly after.

Step 6: Create Your Logo And Upload It To The Site Identity Section Of Your Website/Blog

After you’ve decided on the theme you’ll go with, it’s time to start branding yourself. You can do this by very easily creating a simple logo for your blog business. Of course there are several different options when thinking about designing your logo but for beginners I suggest using a website service like Canva.com when you’re designing your blog’s logo. I designed a few banners and logos when creating my first designs from Canva. After learning and training yourself, you can eventually teach yourself Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator but this is definitely not needed at all. I of course went down this road because I’m a perfectionist but we can save those tutorials for another day…you can learn from my mistakes or “detours” for now.

For now, let’s stick with predetermined layouts, fonts, designs, and social media banners. Another option is to spend a little money and use Fiverr to have your logo created by a professional.

The point is, you should have a logo but it should not be something that takes a lot of time or money in order to get. You can always come back later and hire a real logo designer professional somewhat such as myself who would charge anywhere from 250-500

Once you’re through this step you are done and have a complete blog set up…

!Congratulations!

Key Considerations For Successfully Starting a Blog and Setting It Up For Success

Remember to set your site up for success by thinking in terms of a business and not just a blog. If you already have a business, then great…you can think of this as your storefront – where people come to find out about your brand, your business, and what you have to offer. If you’re a key marketing figure at a company, then blogging is what takes your business to the next level. Starting a successful blog is the same thing as consistently creating content that your customers or audience will love. If you’re just starting out, remember to always keep top of mind the fact that you will eventually be selling something from your blog or website. That something could be products, a service/or consulting, other people’s products (affiliate marketing via ad placement or in-article promotion, and/or post sponsorship), or at a later date your very own digital product(s).
When consistency plays a role in your set up process, it will help later down the line when you start producing content, and then selling your very own digital products from your blog/website..

Taking It To The Next Level: How To Go Beyond Creating Your Blog/Website And Turning It Into A Money Making Machine.

Ready to go beyond just learning how to start a successful blog in 2026….

Taking your blog from a simple content platform to a profitable business requires strategic thinking and deliberate action. While creating quality content is the foundation, true financial success comes from implementing multiple revenue streams and treating your blog like a legitimate business. This means going beyond occasional posts or writing about your passions, and actually building a comprehensive monetization strategy. That strategy should include affiliate marketing partnerships, strategic product promotions, email list building, and potentially creating your very own digital products or services. The key is understanding that a money-making blog isn’t just about traffic—it’s about building trust with your audience, providing genuine value, and strategically positioning offers that solve real problems for your readers. By combining powerful SEO techniques, conversion-optimized content, and smart monetization tactics, you can transform your blog from a passion project into a sustainable income stream that generates revenue while you sleep. The difference between a hobby blog and a profitable business lies in your willingness to treat it as such: setting clear financial goals, tracking key metrics, investing in the right tools and education, and consistently refining your approach based on data-driven insights.

Alternatives To The Method I Use To Start a Successful Blog

Alternatives to the method I use, would be to use sites such as Squarespace (SS). This is essentially an AI builder and while I don’t in any way disapprove of the use of AI, when it comes to the foundation of your online business, you should know how it’s built from the ground up. Squarespace and other sites like Wix can do the job and build you a basic informative website in minutes but you’re missing all the bells and whistles and in the long run you will end up losing every time because you actually need those bells and whistles to run a profitable online business..

The reason the alternative, Squarespace, isn’t beneficial is because for starters it doesn’t optimize for SEO which is the biggest hurdle from the get-go because this directly negatively impacts potential viewership. Another reason the alternative SS is not recommended is because it doesn’t have an easy option for mobile editing which can be seen as a negative with the learning curve required. Whereas WordPress has a simple ‘View As Mobile’ button and most themes come fully mobile optimized to begin with. SS also doesn’t have flexibility with plugins and add-ons whereas WordPress has it all and IS the central hub for most things when starting a successful blog. Ss themes and security,….

Wrapping Up and My Experience With How To Start a Successful Blog

When first starting out, I didn’t have the professional photo collection I have now so I used sites like PIxabay to find stock photos. You can also use your own images especially if you have photography skills. I have done this many times and like to rotate my website/blog images with my own photography, stock photos, and professional “headshot-type” pictures. All of these options work out great for when you are creating custom graphics for your individual blog posts by using Canva. This is a great tool that keeps memory of your designs to include your brand identity such as colors, font, sizes, shapes, titles, and photos. Canva keeps these branded items in file for you so when you go to create your next blog cover image, you already have consistent branded graphics there ready for your blog post featured photo…..for your other blog images, but mostly graphics are especially needed for your pillar posts.

Here’s my super easy step-by-step tutorial on how to create great graphics with almost no skills. (VIDEO COMING SOON)

So now you have a blog. You’re up and running and posting. It’s time to figure out how to start making some money.

Blogging full time isn’t an impossible dream. You just need to learn how to start a successful blog in 2026. The only thing I did to ensure I’d be successful was stay consistent. I’ve tried my hand at blogging a few times. I’ve had 4 blogs so far, this one being my fourth try. The main difference in how I treat my blog today versus how I treated the other three attempts at blogging was one thing and that was and still is…staying consistent and of course never giving up.

Deadlines are also helpful. I gave myself a time frame of one year and made sure that no matter what I made time for it. I had to be making at least $1,000 per month before I spent it on anything other than the business. Anything I made up until I was making over $1,000 per month, I would put it ALL back into the blog. All that was earned from the blog in those early days, went right back into the blog.
I didn’t spend any more money up front, except for my hosting, domain, and theme, so roughly $60. Using these steps, YOU can do it for even LESS. There’s always different ways of doing things but my process works because of longevity. I’ve been in the game for a long time now, (15 years), and I have a lot of important tips to share and even more to teach.

If I can do this, you can do it too! I believe in you! It brings me great joy to be able to share my process with you on how to start a successful blog in 2026. There have been times where I have spent too much unnecessary money on digital tools for my previous blogs when I end up finding out later, a free and better version existed.

To my readers: I know that if you follow these steps, you can be just as successful in launching and later growing your online business. For more tips on blogging success, check out my other articles here
